Best Beauty Discoveries of 2014!

January 5, 2015 Katie Marie 10 Comments

I know everyone is saying it, so I won’t launch into a spiel about how quickly 2014 went by ๐Ÿ™‚ I think the biggest impression that 2014 had on me was all the changes in my life. Ten Cyber Monday Deals that are Happening NOW! (NuMe, Sephora, Ulta, Avon)

December 1, 2014 Katie Marie 3 Comments

Can you believe that today we’re starting the last month of 2014?! I can’t believe it! We’re going to be celebrating New Years eve before we know it. ๐Ÿ™‚

Before I start blabbing too much, let’s dive right into today’s sweet Cyber Monday deals.

10 Cyber Monday Deals Happening NOW!

1. NuMe
They’re always offering great sales throughout the year on their styling tools and products, so I wasn’t sure how they would top all that for Black Friday and Cyber Monday. But if you were able to snag one of their Classic 19mm Wand for only $9.99, than you know they did an outstanding job for Black Friday. ๐Ÿ™‚ And that sale is STILL available — just use the code MAGICMON when you check out ๐Ÿ™‚

Don’t worry, if you weren’t around for that — NuMe still has some great deals for today! Use the code INSTA70 to get 70% off any hair tool or product (though, sadly, it excludes the Lustrum set and holiday catalog). But if you go on NuMe’s website, click the Holiday Catologe, you’ll see great deals like these two below…

Didn’t think you could get a high-quality curling wand for less than $20, huh? Just use the code CYBERCLASSIC and you can! Or if you’re in the market for a new flat iron, don’t settled for the cheap ones that will fry your hair — go for the Silhouette Flat Iron that’s only $22 today (with the code CYBER22!

2. Sephora
icon

As I’m sure you are aware, Sephora likes to surprise their shoppers with great deals first thing in the morning. And I’ve just discovered that, to celebrate Cyber Monday, they are releasing their Limited Edition Naked on the Run palette for only $54. Along with 5 eyeshadows that are almost the same size as the ones in the Naked palettes, this also includes blush, bronzer, Perversion mascara, 24/7 Glide-On eye pencil, and a full size Naked lipgloss, As I said, it’s limited edition, so if you want it make sure you grab it now!

They are also celebrating 26 Days of Delight this holiday. Visit Sephora.com every morning and discover a new FREE Mini. See today’s reward by using the code: DELIGHT.

 3. The Body Shop
icon

Heads up! I know Ulta has all of The Body Shop products 40% off right now….but they’re offering an even better deal!

For Cyber Monday, all products are 50% off! And if that wasn’t awesome enough, they are also giving their customers frees shipping on all orders, no matter the sizes. But, to help you decide how much to spend, they’re also throwing in a free gift if your order is over $50. Pretty Sweet!! I’m not sure what the gift is, but if you are a fan of The Body Shop products (like I AM!!), than this news got you really excited. Happy shopping! ๐Ÿ™‚

4. the Balm
I own a few products from this company (LOVE their Bahama Mama bronzer!), and really like them. I am really tempted to go shopping today, as their super-sweet Cyber Monday deal is that ALL their products are 50% off starting at 7AM Pacific today and will be live for only 24 hours. No code is required to get this sale — just go jump on the site and start shopping!

5. Laura Geller
Today they’re celebrating Cyber Monday by offering a travel size Blush-n-Brighten in Boysenberry, a mini Champagne Spackle, and a mini Blush Brush with any orders over $40. All you have to do is use the code CYBERGWP when you’re checking out!

6. Avon
It’s been a while since I’ve ordered from Avon, but they sell many products I’ve enjoyed in the past (check out their Extralasting Plump & Stay Lip Color), when I used to sell Avon.

For today they’re offering 30% off any purchase over $30, plus free shipping. And if that deal wasn’t sweet enough, theyre also giving away a FREE limited edition beauty bundle featuring six of Avonโ€™s most-loved
products in an exclusive tote with any $30 purchase. Totally worth placing an order today, right?!

7. Too Faced
icon

Okay, so Too Faced has several things going on. First up, all their sale items are 50% off (sweet). And they’re offering a discount depending on how much your total order is. So if you spend $60, you get $10. Spend $75, you get $15. And if you spend $100, then you get a total of $20 (that’s even sweeter).

But the creme-la-creme at Too Faced is that they’re offering a $35 ‘Mystery Grab Bag’. I have no idea what is going to be in this bag, but I’m sure it will be awesome and worth well over the $35 it will cost you. Get it before it’s gone!

8. Urban Decay
Have you been eyeing that bold, beautiful Electric palette that Urban Decay came out with recently? (I know I have! It’s so bright…it’s kind of hypnotizing!) Well, today is the day to get it. Regularly $49, Urban Decay has it on sale for ONLY $35!

Plus, they’re offering their customers free shipping along with a sample of their famous 24/7 Velvet Glide-On eye pencil.

UPDATE: Use the code UD20 at checkout and get an additional 20% off your order! Sweetness!

9. Ulta
Oh my goodness! I almost don’t know where to start! Ulta has so many great sales going on right now. To see the ad, just click here. They keep this ad updated whenever things go out of stock so you know.

But a few of the sales that I am most excited about the fact that Real Technique brushes are 30% off today. I’ve been wanting to get a few! Mario Badescu, DermaBlend, and Strivectin are all 20% off, and don’t forget about the LORAC Champagne Dreams eyeshadow palette (value $133) is going to be only $15. Be ready — this is all going to go FAST!

And if your total order is over $60, make sure you try to snag one of their free 19 piece beauty bags. They’re valued at $115 and there’s also 3 bonus coupons that you can use on products later. Totally worth getting, if it’s still available!

UPDATE: Holy cow, make sure you DON’T miss out on the $10 off coupon that Ulta is offering TODAY ONLY! ๐Ÿ˜€ You have to spend $50 in order to get the $10 off, but if you’re going for the beauty bag below, than that won’t be a problem for you. ๐Ÿ™‚

10. Ebates
And I’ve saved the BEST for LAST! If you don’t know about Ebates, click here to read my previous post to read all about it. But if you don’t have an account with them yet, you really need to! I’ve saved so much since I signed up!

Anywho, the reason I consider Ebates the best part of Cyber Monday deals is that not only are you going to be able to save LOTS of money on different brands today, but you can save even more by going through Ebates before you place that order.

For example, I’ve listed below all of the websites I mentioned above….along with how much cash back you could earn in addition to all of the other savings I’ve already mentioned. ๐Ÿ™‚

NuMe — 5% cash back!
Sephora — 8% cash back!
The Body Shop — 8% cash back!
the Balm — not available, sorry!
Laura Geller —not available, sorry!
Avon — 3% cash back!

My Review of the Chocolate Bar

Before I begin, let me just say that I think I am the only one who feels this way about this palette. Not sure why I’m the odd ball out, lol, but this is my honest opinion.

There is NO mistaking that the packaging for this palette is spot on — deserves 5 gold stars! It’s designed like a chocolate bar and has a really sturdy metal case. And since my all-time favorite color is brown and I LOVE chocolate…yeah, the packaging made me really happy. ๐Ÿ™‚ The magnetic clasp is fairly strong, too, so there is no fear of it falling open accidentally.

Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette // FromMyVanity.com
I was really excited to dive into this palette the moment it arrived at my doorstep. I grabbed my camera and tried some swatches on my arm….and wasn’t too impressed. A few of the colors were beautiful and buttery soft (like the LORAC shadows that I love), and I liked them — but there were more than a few shades that felt dry and kind of rough.

Applying them onto my eyes looked and felt a bit better. The shadows with glitter had some pretty significant fall out (I do my face after my eyes, thankfully) but the finished results still looked great. The matte browns that I used for blending were beautiful. Definitely my favorite 3 out of the whole palette!

The darker shades that had glitter — Candied Violet and Gilded Ganache — felt pretty dry to the touch. The pretty shimmery pink shade was very soft, so soft that one corner broke off. And I’m not rough on my shadows at all.

First Row

My favorite aspect of this palette would have to be that it smells like chocolate and the matte brown shades! Considering this is almost a $50 palette, I found it hard to justify owning this palette when I have other palettes that have matte browns and shimmery pinks.

Second Row

This palette is very unique in that it’s a neutral palette, but has many colors that other neutral palettes do not. (the beautiful green, violet, burgundy, golden brown). I think if you are looking for your first neutral palette to invest in, this would definitely be a good one to get, as it will give you more variety in colors and finishes than the other high-end neutral palettes that I’ve seen.

Third Row

For me, though, I just found that I had a dupe for just about every shade in here that I already owned. So when I would do my makeup, I often would just pull out my other shadows or palettes. If you don’t own many neutral palettes, however, I think this is a great one to start off with. The Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette has pigmented shadows and some pops of color to play with. For me, however, I just don’t find myself reaching for this as much as I had expected/envisioned. Maybe I hyped it up too much in my mind

Are you an avid makeup collector, or do you only like to own makeup products that you use? I find myself *wishing* I was a collector, but when it comes down to it…it bothers me when I have makeup I don’t use.

My Ideal Palette Tag! (Created by Carah Amelie)

October 10, 2014 Katie Marie 2 Comments

I’m so sorry for my absent on Wednesday. My day was really busy on Tuesday and I got so mixed up on my days I didn’t realize a post was due until Wednesday afternoon.

For today, though, I have a fun tag to share with you all. I tag everyone to do it — I enjoyed it!

Oh, also, a giveaway on my Facebook page just went live. If you want to win some sweet makeup products, go check it out!

This tag is pretty easy — all you have to do is create your own, ideal palette from the shadows you love. Make sure to follow these simple rules.

RULES:
2 Highlight Colors
2 Lid Colors
2 Crease Colors
2 Outer Corner Shadows
2 Bonus Shadows
Palette Packaging
So let’s jump right into discovering what eyeshadows would make up my ideal palette. ๐Ÿ™‚

My Ideal Palette Tag!
2 Highlight Colors
My favorite eyeshadow to use as a highlighter is, without a doubt, the cream shade from Physicians Formula’s Eyeshadow Quad in Classic Canyon.

I use it on a daily basis, it works out perfectly for my skintone. My second choice for a highlight shade is from the Lorac Pro palette and is the shade called Cream.

It’s a bit lighter, but I just dab my brush into it really lightly and it works well to highlight under my brows or my inner corner.

2 Lid Colors
If I want to do a colorful eye look and I’m not sure what to do, I always grab for the Wet n Wild trio Walking on Eggshell‘s lid shade.

It’s the prettiest pigmented pink color that has a really nice shimmer to it once applied on the lid. The next shade would be one called Schitzo from the Balm’s Nude Tude palette.

It’s a beautiful shimmery brown shade that I love to use on my lid when I want a smokey look.

2 Crease Colors

Crease colors have to be my favorite, so this was definitely the hardest two to pick in this tag. ๐Ÿ™‚ My top favorite, though, is definitely from Physician Formula’s Matte Collection Quad in Classic Canyon.

It doesn’t have a name, but it’s the shade right underneath my crease color. It’s just a few shades darker than my lid, looks natural, and blends like a dream. ๐Ÿ™‚ The other shade would be from the Lorac Pro palette called Taupe.

This shade is pretty similar to my first crease color, but this one has more warmth in it, whereas the Physicians Formula one is a cooler tone. I love them both!

2 Outer Corner Shadows
My choice for the two corner colors are both from the Lorac Pro palette (I know, I love that palette!). First one is the color Black.

I have several shades of black, but this is the one I always reach for. It is so pigmented, I love it! The next shade is their Espresso.

This is the shade I reach for if I don’t want to use black in my crease. It’s really dark, but not as dark as black. And it works great for those natural days ๐Ÿ™‚

2 Bonus Shadows
I’m so glad that Carah decided to put this option in this tag. ๐Ÿ™‚ the first one I picked right away was from Wet n Wild’s Comfort Zone palette, the green lid shade. Green really compliments my eye color, so of course I had to include it in my ideal palette.

The great thing about the two Wet n Wild palettes I’ve mentioned are that they are incredibly soft and pigmented. It only takes a little bit to get a beautiful color on your eyelid. With this green shade it works best with a white base, as it really brings out the color. The next shade would be from Lorac’s Unzipped palette in the shade Unbridled.

If I am doing an evening look with a pink eyelid, then I usually like to use this liberally in the outer V section and maybe just a touch of the black to give me a really pretty eye look for the evening.

Palette Packaging
I like streamline packaging, so out of all the palettes I own, Lorac’s Pro palette is definitely my favorite. ๐Ÿ™‚

It’s really thin and has a nice size mirror inside, too. I also like how it feels. True, it can look a bit dirty, but I just wipe it down every now and then, I don’t mind it. ๐Ÿ™‚

My Complete Palette

So here’s all the colors that would be in my Ideal Palette, if I was able to make one, that is. ๐Ÿ™‚ Here’s what the swatches look like on my arm.

Whoever would like to do this tag is welcome to, so don’t feel like you can’t. But I am specifically  tagging the following people. If you don’t know them…go check them out! They’re awesome bloggers/vloggers. ๐Ÿ™‚

Tianna — Storybook Apothecary
Laila — Townhouse Palette
Elle — ElleSees
Stephanie — The Fantasia
Dani — Coffee Break with Dani

I’ve never tagged a Youtuber before, but I love watching Dani’s videos and would LOVE to see what kind of palette she would put together. ๐Ÿ™‚

Question for My Readers: What are your top favorite shadows? What brands are they from? If you don’t have a blog to do this tag on — leave all your answers in the comments below! And if you do post this tag, leave your links below so I can check them out!

The Nude ‘tude palette from The Balm has some sultry colors (Makeup Review)

September 1, 2014 Katie Marie 5 Comments

Over the weekend From My Vanity hit 1,000 followers! I am SO excited to have hit such a big number — I would never have thought my blog would be anywhere close to having so many awesome readers, but I am so happy and thankful that it has.

I hope to put together a fun giveaway as a thank you to you all ๐Ÿ™‚ Not sure when I can do it, I am going to be doing a lot of traveling in September, but hopefully before too long. So be on the lookout for that. ๐Ÿ™‚

Love you all!

I purchased the products with my personal funds.

About The Balm’s Nude ‘Tude Eyeshadow Palette

Retail Price: $36
This amazing palette consists of 12 beautiful shadows that make wearing
nudes sexy! These satiny smooth colors can be applied naturally, i.e.
โ€œlet me slip into something more comfortableโ€ or beautifully layered.
The wide range gives you light highlighters as well as brazen bold
shades that work to add definition and emphasis to your lids. Nude`tude
allows you to dramatically dress up your eyesโ€”if nothing else!
There are 2 different types of palettes you can get: the ‘Naughty’ or the ‘Nice’ palette. BOTH VERSIONS OF THE NUDE`TUDE PALETTE CONTAIN THE SAME EYESHADOW COLORS.

My Review:

First Impression & Packaging…
First off, let me start by saying that I purchased the ‘Nice’ version of this palette. ๐Ÿ™‚ The neutral colors in this palette really attracted me, as did the pretty shimmery finish of the shadows. Not all of the shadows are full of shimmer, but I’ll get into that in a minute. The palette itself is beautifully packaged and has a magnetic closure. I love the look of it!

Product & Application…
All of the shadows are really smooth and have nice pigmentation. As you can see from my swatches (and these swatches are without any primer underneath them), they are pretty pigmented. With a primer underneath, these colors really pop and show up well on your eyelid.

As I mentioned, not all of the colors have shimmer in them, thankfully. Sultry, Sexy, Serious, and Sleek are all really pretty matte shades. The black color in this palette isn’t a very intense black and I usually end up reaching for a different matte black or darn brown to get a really dark outer crease to complete a look I am doing.

Major Likes & Dislikes…
I like that all of the colors are natural — hence the name of the palette, Nude’tude (As if that’s not obvious, Katie, really…) Personally, while I love adding shimmer or color to my look, I still stay in the safety of the more natural colors like the pinks, browns, and greens. Nude’tude gives me all those colors in beautiful pigmentation, making this aspect a major like for me.

I think my only dislike is that the darker colors blend out a bit, making them not as dark as I typically like. You can build it up to a suitable level, but for me it’s just easier to use the black in my LORAC Pro to Go to get the job done quickly.

Final Thoughts…
While I am glad that I own this palette, I don’t think I would consider it a ‘must have’ to add to your collection. If you want a palette with neutral colors and don’t want to spend $50+ on any of the Naked, then I would definitely recommend you purchase this palette instead. But if you already have one of those palettes — or have a bunch of smaller neutral palettes from the drugstore (like the ones from Physicians Formula or Wet n Wild) — then I don’t think this palette is a must for your collection.

I used Stand-Offish, Sultry, Sleek, and Serious

It really comes down to if you want to buy this palette. The colors are soft and pigmented and you can create some pretty looks with it. I know I am glad I bought it and have it in my collection. I’ve only tried 2 or 3 products from The Balm, but I am looking forward to trying many more in the future.

Question for My Readers: If you were to purchase this palette, which one would you want to buy the most — the ‘Naughty’ or ‘Nice’ palette? Why?

I purchased the products mentioned
above with my own personal money. I was not compensated in any way for
posting this review. I only recommend products that I have used
personally and believe will be beneficial for my readers.

My Review…

This is what the cover of the palette
looks like after you slide it out of the
protective casing

First Impression…
The packaging is really nice – very compact and visually appealing. (Another reason this palette would make a great gift for someone. ๐Ÿ˜‰ The palette has a strong magnetic close to it, so once you let it fall closed you don’t have to worry about it accidentally opening. The step-by-step instructions that they include inside is really handy, especially if you are a beginner with eyeshadow or you are gifting this palette to someone who is a beginner.

The selection of colors for this palette was very “holiday appropriate” with the gold, silver and sparkles. I could totally see someone using this palette to make a beautiful, sparkling smokey eye for a Christmas Eve event. The blush was totally matte, but it did have some very tiny, subtle shimmer in it. As I said above, very appropriate for this holiday season.

Without Eyeshadow Primer

The Application…
Okay, so I first swatched these colors on my arm without eye primer and wasn’t too impressed, honestly. The colors did show up, but not very pigmented at all. And the glitter shadows (Frost and Glimmer) showed up more as just glitter than eye shadow. However, with that said, I did go back and swatch these on top of a primer (picture below) and was very pleased with how well the colors showed up that time. The glitter shadows had a lot more color in them. They show up really well when applied with a brush on the eyes, but I prefer using my fingers to apply it as I feel I get a more pigmented, richer application.

The colors lasted very well on my eyelids. Let me say, though, that I tend to have very oily eyelids and any eyeshadow that I put on without a primer will crease, no matter what. But with a primer, these shadows lasted as long as I’d expect them to and about how long my other eyeshadows last (that are from LORAC, Wet n Wild, Physicians Formula).

Please Note: These eyeshadows were swatched on my arm. I have a light/medium olive skintone, so these eyeshadows would definitely show up (especially the gold) if you have a lighter skinetone than I do. ๐Ÿ™‚

With Eyeshadow Primer

Major Likes…
Out of all the eye colors in this palette, I found that I really liked Platinum the best. It was a beautiful silver that matched a lot of my outfits. And when I used that along with the Coal shade, I was able to get a great smokey eye. I personally prefer the darker eye looks, so this palette is right up my alley.

As for the blush, I’ll be honest and say that I initially thought I wouldn’t like it — it had a glittery/shimmer finish and since I have pretty oily skin, I usually stay away from shimmer as it makes my oiliness look worse. I use a very light hand when I apply this, but I was really surprised and pleased with the results. It gave my cheeks a very nice, natural glow to them. And since this palette is meant for the holidays and to use with a smokey eye, I can imagine having a blush with some shimmer would be really good for an evening event — to help keep the glow in your face, even in dim lighting.

Swatch of the blush. Very pretty!
No primer of any kind.

Major Dislikes…
I stated this before, but I’ll mention it again — I’m not a fan of glitter. I enjoy some shimmer in my eyeshadows on occasion, but don’t like the chunky-looking glitter that I see in some shadows. So, as you may guess, I wasn’t as big a fan of the Frost and Glimmer shadows as someone who liked glitter might be. I noticed that out of all the shadows, the glittery shades would start to loose the pigmentation first, leaving the lids with just a glittery mess. This is not something I enjoy – at all – and so I find that I tend to leave these two colors alone, for the most part.

That’s really all that I have to say for dislikes. The colors weren’t super vivid/pigmented, but with a primer I was very pleased with the color payoff.

Final Thoughts…
All in all, the Holiday Smokey Eye Palette is a very nice palette to give to someone this season. And with the special introductory price of $25, I’d say this palette is very well worth it! Especially if you (or whoever you might gift this to) is more into glitter than I am. With that said, the regular retail price ($40) seems kind of high for a palette with 4 shadows and a blush — especially when the pigmentation isn’t totally out-of-this-world. So, make sure that if you want to buy this palette, buy it NOW while it is on sale! I have no idea how long the introductory sale will last…but don’t miss it!

And don’t forget — use the coupon code SGHOLIDAY when you checkout to get 10% off your online order!

Also Note: I just saw that this palette is given as a free deluxe gift with all orders made over $50 on Studio Gear for the month of November. So now is REALLY the time! ๐Ÿ˜€

READERS: What do you think? Is this something you’d give as a gift? Or get for yourself to use this holiday season?

I received these product from StudioGear for free in order to review. It was not required that I give a positive review, but solely to express my own thoughts and opinions of this product, which I have done. I only recommend products and/or services that I have personally used or experienced and that I believe will be good for my readers. This post is sponsored by BrandBacker.
