Essential Oils. Shortly after I got married I was really intrigued to start using essential oils in my life…but I was quickly overwhelmed by the amount of essential oils that are available, which ones are best for what, which ones work well together, which ones do not work well together…honestly, each time I started to look into essential oils I quickly became overwhelmed and just stopped all together. Until recently, when I finally decided to just try a few key oils and incorporate it into my life in some small and simple way. Which is what today’s post is all about! We are not diving in deep into essential oils and the plethora of claims or ways you can use them. We’re just going to talk about a few easy ways that you can start to add them into your daily life without getting overwhelmed.

5 Easy Ways to Add Essential Oils Into Your Life
1. Breathing It In
The first way I started to incorporate essential oils into my routine was simply to breath it in. When I was pregnant with my second child and experiencing really severe morning sickness, I learned Peppermint Essential Oil could help with nausea so I would put a few drops on the edge of my long sleeve sweater or a tissue paper and sniff it on occasion. The sweater was especially handy when I was out running errands and random smells started to bother me — it was really easy to just pull up my sleeve to cover my hand and bring my hand up to my nose. Ginger Essential Oil is also a good one to use, too. I wouldn’t say that by just inhaling the essential oil it made my nausea go away…but it definitely helped take the edge off of offensive smells that I couldn’t control.
Another oil that is good to inhale is Lavender Essential Oil. If you’re wanting help relaxing at night, put a drop or two on a tissue and either place it near your head or tuck it into your pillowcase so that you can smell the aroma as you fall asleep.
2 Diffuse It
Another easy way to start using essential oils in your daily routine is to purchase a diffuser like this one and diffuse an oil — or combo of oils — of your own choosing. My favorites essential oil to diffuse are Sweet Orange or Lemongrass. Can you tell I love citrus-y smells?? 😛 Not only does it make my house smell amazing, but it’s also supposed to assist the immune system to fight off germs and free radicals. Each diffuser will come with their own instructions, but for this specific diffuser I purchased I mixed 6-10 drops of essential oil into the water and typically let it diffuse for about an hour.
3 Replace Dryer Sheets
I love the smell of clean clothes, but I try not to use dryer sheets for several reasons. So I recently started to put 5 or so drops of Lemon Essential Oil onto my dryer balls. That way when I toss them into the dryer it gives the clothes a very clean and fresh scent! This is, hands down, my favorite way to use lemon essential oil because it’s so easy, natural, and saves money!
4 kill germs before you get home
Did you know that you can get a car diffuser? I didn’t! But you can get this Aromatherapy Car Diffuser that hooks into your car that way after I leave a store I can diffuse some Germ Destroyer or Immune Boost to help keep the kids from bringing any icky germs/illness back home with us. Do you have kids in school? The Immune Boost essential oil (that has Lemon, Palmarosa, Dill Weed, Petitgrain, Copaiba Balsam and Frankincense Carteri) would be a good idea to diffuse in the car or in the house for half an hour after the kids come home.
5 Skincare
One of the key areas that I wanted to learn how to incorporate essential oils was into my skincare. I’ve used Tea Tree Oil a few years back to help with acne, but that was the extent of my knowledge of essential oils in skincare. So I’ve been doing more research lately, trying to determine which essential oils would be the most beneficial to add to my skincare routine. Another thing I learned alone the way is that it’s important to use a carrier oil to help mix the oils in with your skincare. It’s the ole’ “water and oil don’t mix” scenario and sometimes — depending on what type of skincare product you’re trying to add essential oils to — it can have a hard time mixing properly if you just drop it in alone.
So, for example, I wanted to incorporate Frankincense Essential Oil into my skincare routine along with Rose Hip Seed Oil and Jojoba Oil to act as a carrier for the frankincense. Rose Hip Seed Oil is great for diminishing scars and softening the texture of your skin, frankincense is great for it’s anti-aging benefits, and Jojoba oil is my personal favorite oil to use in skincare because it’s the closest oil that mimics the oils we naturally have in our skin, so it soaks in the best. Anyways, I’ve been mixing about 2-3 drops of Frankincense Essential Oil, 10 drops of the Rose Hip Seed Oil, and 3 teaspoons of Jojoba Oil in a dark glass jar. Every night I just dip a few (clean) fingers into the mixed oil and massage it over my skin before using my serum-of-choice on top. of that, and apply to my skin. I’m excited to see how my skin’s texture improves over the next few months from adding these two ingredients into my skincare routine!

I love using essential oils in my cuticle oils and balms. I’ve been hesitant to diffuse them as there is so much conflicting information about wether they are safe for dogs.

My essential oil use is limited to aromatherapy when I get massages on occasion or what is added to my favorite perfume oils. It’s not really something that I’ve paid much attention to.
