The Swatch Comparisons
It might be a little difficult to see the difference between the swatches, but the Urban Decay liquid liners have a definite sparkle and shiny finish to it, while the NYX ones dry down very matte.
The Similarities
Packaging
The packaging looks pretty identical. They are both the same size and they open/work the same way. The only difference, really, is that the black is just swapped — on NYX it’s on the handle and for Urban Decay it’s on the bottom.
Feeling on the Eyes
The Urban Decay liquid liners has a definite “tightening” aspect to it, almost like shrink wrap on the eyes. It’s very hard to explain — it isn’t anything uncomfortable but it’s just noticeable as you wear it throughout the day. The NYX liners also has that feeling, but it’s a lot less than the Urban Decay liners — it’s so slight that after a while you don’t notice the feeling.
Amount of Products
Urban Decay’s Razor Sharp eyeliners contain 0.07 ounces of products and the NYX Vivid Brights eyeliner comes with 0.06 ounces of product. So just one tick away from having the same amount of product…which was close enough in my book 🙂
Ease of Use
They both have the same type of brush tip and have the same amount of ease when applying them to your eyes. The Urban Decay’s liner tip is a bit shorter than the NYX one, but I don’t notice it causing that big of a difference when using them.
The Differences
Color Finishes
The Urban Decay Razor Sharp liners have a few matte shades, but the majority of the shades they offer have a metallic finish to it — and the two liners that I own are both metallic finish. The NYX Vivid Brights liner are all matte (to my knowledge).
Lasting Power
As you will see in the demonstration video below, the NYX Vivid Brights eyeliner is not water resistant at all — if you have a good cry or get caught in the rain…you’ll have colored liner streaming down your face! The Urban Decay Razor Sharp eyeliner is much more water resistant — to much water and it will come off, but if you have watery eyes or have a teary-eyed moment I don’t think you’d have to be worried about it. With that said, for a normal day’s wear (without sweating, raining, crying, etc), I didn’t notice a difference with how well they wore — they both looked amazing at the end of the day.
Pigmentation/Color Vibrancy
The Urban Decay Razor Sharp liner is very pigmented, smooth and I find it very easy to create a winged liner without having to deal with patchiness. The NYX Vivid Brights liner is a bit trickier to use — you can get it to look very even, but it takes some building up and going over some lines a few times.
Demonstration and Water Test
So, Is It a Dupe?
Yes and no! If you are looking to find exact dupes for colors/finishes for the Urban Decay Razor Sharp liners…you’re going to be disappointed. The NYX Vivid Brights…really aren’t that vivid! Especially that green — it was such a disappointment for me, especially when you compare it to the color on the outside of the packaging.
However, if you just want to find a good quality colored liquid liner that will give you the fun looks that the Razor Sharp liners give you, then I think yes! The NYX Vivid Brights are very good quality and hold up well to an average day.
So it’s going to come down to what finish and types of colors you are looking for. If you want a liner with a metallic finish, than you don’t really have an option of saving and should get the Urban Decay ones. But if you like a matte finish and have been eyeing a specific color that they have in the line…I don’t think you’d be disappointed with the Vivid Brights. Just be prepared for the color to look a bit different than the outside packaging — both the green and red were NOT what I was expecting and I’m still on the lookout for a true vivid red liner. But that isn’t what this post is about, lol.
Let me know what you think of these two products — do you consider them dupes? Do you own either the Razor Sharp or Vivid Brights liners? I’d love to know!

Never Say Die Beauty says
I have a few old metallic liners from UD that I love. They are so easy to apply, and they look great. It would be fun to try some of the more affordable matte shades from NYX. Great post!
Cindy Ingalls says
I think I’d like to like to colors from each in my collection!
MarciaF says
It’s nice to know that if you want a trendy shade that you’ll wear once in a while that you can get a reasonably priced dupe.
Laugh, Love, Contour says
I prefer the price point of the NYX, but I have watery eyes plus oily lids so I don’t think it would hold up for me. I’ve not tried this particular product from UD but really should!
Kathryne says
It’s really hard to find dupes for certain brands. Great comparison review
Courtney B says
This was a great breakdown. I feel like I don’t wear bright colors often enough to need the UD, so the issues mentioned with NYX would be no big deal for infrequent wear.
Chelsea says
I love dupe/dud reviews. I’m finding that NYX is actually a great alternative for a lot of products. I’ve always been deterred by how inexpensive some NYX products are, but they really are decent quality a lot of times. For someone who doesn’t frequently wear liquid liners, I’d say NYX is definitely a good dupe.
25 Sweetpeas says
For the price I def would stick with NYX. Fabulous comparison! You are so through, and loved the video!
Nikki says
I really want to try the Nyx ones since I rarely wear Liner. I’ve been looking for a nice, bright red liner for a while and have had no luck. Maybe a bright red liquid lipstick would work.
CosmetopiaDigest.com says
I had no idea UD had these. I prefer the UD colours and the formula. Even though they’re metallic, they look so wearable.
My Nai Polish Obsession says
I actually prefer the UD shades, they seem nicer. I don’t mind paying a higher price to get exactly what I want/like.
Krystal E says
I haven’t worn a liquid liner in years because I’m unsteady, it’s humid, and I cry 😀
But I can really appreciate a good review like this with comparisons on the wear, the application and even the color! It makes a big difference when I have to watch my pennies!
Natoya says
I love this review and comparision. I love that NYX essentially has a good dupe for everything. I actually found a few of the NYX liners on sale! Total score!
