My Review…
First Impression…
Using cleansing oils in your skincare routine seems to be a new fad this year and I’ve been really intrigued to see if it would work well for my skin type. I have acne-prone skin and I hear that cleansing oils are a less-harsh method of cleaning your face, so I was all about trying this Nourishing Cleansing Oil out and seeing if it would help keep my outbreaks at bay.
Packaging…
It’s in a really sleek, tall bottle with a white pump at the top. It dispenses a decent amount into the palm of your hand; I personal use about a pump and a half on my face when I go to take my makeup off. The bottle has 4.2 fl oz of product in it and for the price — $7.99 — that’s a decent amount. Especially when you compare the price and quantity of other cleansing oils that are currently out there.
I do have one complaint with the packaging — it leaks. I think it’s something with the pump. I feel that each time I use it, a little leaks out from underneath the nozzle. Every time I pull this out of m drawer, there’s a little oil puddle around it. It’s not a significant amount that makes me worry it’s being wasted, but just annoying. And I know it’s not just me — I’ve read other reviews that say this as well. So it’d be really nice if Garnier could figure that out and fix it. 🙂
Product & Application…
As I said above, I use about a pump and a half of Nourishing Cleansing Oil to massage into my face for a few minutes. Then I get my hands wet with a bit of water and massage that in till I get a milky-white consistency. Then I just rinsed it all off. 🙂 It worked really well in getting ALL of my makeup off! And I mean all — I checked with a little toning water and a cotton pad to make sure I had no makeup residue left over, and there wasn’t any left over on the pad. So I’m very happy — I like using cleansing oil to take off my makeup MUCH better than using the Pond’s Cold Cream Cleanser.
Any Major Likes & Dislikes…
I like how well it cleanses my face, definitely! 🙂 I also love how moisturized and smooth-feeling it leaves my skin! Not in the least bit dry or tight. I almost feel like I don’t need to moisturized (though I do, I promise! ;-).
I don’t like that it leaks, which is probably the biggest dislike I have about this product.
Final Thoughts…
I love it! This is my first cleansing oil I’ve ever used, so I don’t know how it compares to other ones out there. But I do know I like it more than cold cream cleansers or makeup remover wipes. It’s a lot easier than the cream to wash off (and not be left feeling greasy) and it’s more thorough and gentle on my skin than the wipes. I also LOVE that it includes macadamia and jojoba oil — two oils that I really love! All around, this is a great product and I definitely recommend you check it out the next time you’re at the drugstore. Especially if you want to try out adding a cleansing oil into your routine.
Question for My Readers: What do you like to use to remove your makeup at the end of the day? Have you tried any cleansing oils yourself?
Kate S (4readin) says
Great review! I don't typically use a product to remove my make up. I have never used a cleansing oil either. It sounds like this one works really well. Where did you find it?
Have tried contouring? If so, did you use bronzer to do that!
Lucy says
I have really dry sensitive skin and have been trying to find a non comodegenic oil based cleansing method. I will need to check out the ingredients in this.
Katie McCurdy says
Kate – You can get this at any local drugstore, or Walmart, or Ulta, even, I think. I purchased this one at Target, personally, but have seen them at CVS, Walgreens, and RitAid.
Yes, I do contour. And I really like it! 🙂 On the days I am just putting on a little makeup, I like to contour my cheeks and jaw — just to give my face a little dimension after the foundation.
Katie McCurdy says
Lucy – Yes, do check this out! It doesn't dry my skin out at all — and I've been going through a very dry period with my skin. After using this, my skin always feels moisturized.
Sifa Mukaddam says
Does it work really great ?
Katie McCurdy says
Sifa – This product works GREAT at taking off my makeup, and I love that it isn't super-drying; because it's an oil. My skin is going through a weird faze — it's been oily my whole life, but since my move to California, it's gone really, really dry. But in both cases, this product still gives me great results. When I take the time to massage it into my skin, all my makeup will come off. And I mean ALL of it — I use a toner to check and make sure, and there's never any makeup residue. 🙂
The only downfall to this product is that it leaks pretty badly. I took it with my flying twice since I purchased it, and both times it leaked all in the bag. And a good amount, too, which is a bummer. But the product is still great, so that's really up to you. 🙂
Katie McCurdy says
Priscilla – I'm glad that you enjoyed the review! Yes, I thought it was a really neat idea, too, and I've really been enjoying adding it into my daily routine. 🙂

I heard others talking about using products like this but worried it would leave me feeling greasy. Thanks for the review. I think I am going to try it now. I like how you said it makes your skin feel soft.
Kate S (4readin) says
I have done a little bit on contouring too and I like to do that. But how d you choose the right product to contour with? Do you typically use bronzer? What is the right shade?
Katie McCurdy says
Megan – Not greasy at all! I do follow up with a light facial wash, but even before I use that the water does a good job of getting all the oil off. Hope you like it!
Kate – There are many products out there that will give you a good bronzed look. The color really depends on what skintone you are. If you are really like, you're not going to want to go with a deep bronzed shade. But if you're really tan, a soft bronzed shade won't show up. A good, affordable bronzer I would recommend is from NYC or Rimmel. As for shade, as I said, it depends on your skin tone.
Would it be helpful if I did a blog post on bronzers for you?? Let me know, I'd love to help you out anyway I can 🙂
Kate S (4readin) says
It would be great to see a post on choosing materials to use bronzer, brushes, anyhow to contour. I do it occasionally but don't really have a bronzer. I saw this video on countering: http://www.frmheadtotoe.com/2013/02/basics-how-to-contour.html#more. Perhaps a post on the afore mentioned and contouring? But only if you would want to.
Thanks for the tips. It's hard to know. I realize you don't know what my skin tone is exactly, but how much darker than your skin tone do you want it to be? Just a shade darker? A little darker? More of a medium contrast?
Thank you!

Kate – I watch From Head to Toes videos as well! Love her reviews! A few other youtubers I would highly recommend checking out are…

I've been following these girls for years (except for the last one, I just found her and LOVE her videos!) and I've learned a LOT about makeup application from them all. 🙂
If you are just starting to dabble in contouring, I would say just two shades darker than your natural skintone. Use a fluffy brush (I use a small, fluffy blush brush) and just give the hollows of your cheeks, your forehead, and your jaw line a light dusting. That way it will just give you a healthy-looking contrast on your face without it being too strong. And then as you get used to the contour, you can go darker, if you wish, and get more of a concentrated contour in the hallow of your cheek.
One thing to keep in mind — make sure you look for shades in your skintone. If you are cool-tone, look for a bronzer that is also cool tone. A warm tone bronzer might look orange-y on you.
Hope that helped! I will make a note of this and maybe start a series on my blog with some tutorials for things like this. We shall see. Some fun changes are coming to the blog, and I can't wait to share them with you all!
Kate S (4readin) says
Katie, thank you so much. That's super helpful. I've seen things on how to apply bronzer to contour, but not how to choose the right materials to actually do it. thanks for taking the time to answer my question and give me some suggestions on other people who might have some other tips.
I will definitely keep the cool/warm tone shades in mind when choosing one. Thanks! But… how do you know which you are? Cool verses light?
Katie Garvin says
Kate – No problem! Actually, a beauty youtuber I subscribe to just recently posted a video on how to pick out your correct shade. And in that video she also explains how to figure out if you're cool tone or warm tone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9_D_sBL1jw See if this helps you figure it out. 🙂

Thank you! That is super helpful.

Kate – Great, so glad I could help!
